More German chronicles

Hello again! Since we´re finding better internet connections after we left ´the mountains’, we’ll try to get you a daily update from now on.

WE left Gänsefurth shortly after 8 am and we enjoyed the mostly paved areas of the R1/D3… at least after Stassfurt! The main problem we have every time the route gets inside or across a village or town is that someone had the brilliant idea to cover the streets with cobblestones! We had to get on the sidewalk to avoid those big chunks of rock but even there we found it was just slightly better, as they were also covered with smaller and less painful little stones. Anyway, it’s something one can’t but notice –and surely feel– and definitely the main thing we don’t like about this route!

Today we had, as usual, just a bit of everything: paved, unpaved, a bit of dirt and cobblestones. We went through forest areas, small villages and even a town with more than 5 people on the streets (in the whole place). It could well be due to the summer holidays but –with maybe two or three exceptions– we have not seen so many locals along the German part of this route.

Anyway, today was a very nice and pleasant day, except for just a couple of minor ‘buts’: first, we weren’t expecting to still be this hot by the end of the journey –which we completed at exactly 3 pm. And second, the signposts are not that easy to follow or at times we ended up finding them in places they didn’t make much sense. We noticed that since we entered Sachsen-Anhalt and luckily Pak has always the navigation on the phone as a backup. However, we hadn’t used it so regularly since a couple of days ago, when we entered the state. And that’s it for today!

Oh, how I remember those cobblestones. Up on the pedals as much as I could but impossible to be comfortable. I now have to get out my map to look at the R1/D3. Stay well and drink lots of water and beer.

Thank you Mary! We hope you and Les are doing well! You’ll see that R1 is the route from Calais -you can actually can start in Scotland but it isn’t called R1- and goes all the way to St Petersburg. Big hugs!
